On September 28th escrypt held the workshop Secure CarBox secure hardware for automobiles at the centre for IT-Security in Bochum (Germany). The workshop was appreciated by automobile manufacturers, component suppliers and government agencies. The aim of the workshop was to strengthen the German automobile industry by providing a platform to bundle the activities of secure hardware for automobiles.
High availability and safety can only be reached when safety as well as security (security as a part of safety) is regarded. Thus, security increases the safety in cars and helps to reduce the victims from car accidents.
The first part of the workshop consisted of two invited lectures. After the introduction by Willi Mannheims (CEO, escrypt) and Dr.-Ing. Thomas Wollinger (CSO, escrypt), Professor Christof Paar (Chair of communication security, eurobits) lectured about secure hardware for applications in the automobile. Then, Mr. Klaus Keus (Head of Section "Neue Technologien", Federal Office for IT-Security) was talking about Data security in the autombile as seen by the Federal Office for Information Security.
In the second part of the workshop the participants discussed constructively the applications of secure hardware in the automobile today and in the future. The workshop offered the possibility to talk about various applications, questions and products. The digital tachograph for trucks was mentioned, the instrument cluster as well as the control units in the car and in commercial vehicle. Also problems of the security in the car and the organisational security were discussed.
