Supporting Bochum’s profile as a center of technology - Friedhelm Pickhard honoured with university medal

As a supporter of Bochum as a center of technology, Friedhelm Pickhard, Chairman of the Board of Management of ESCRYPT's parent company ETAS, was presented the university medal by Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) on November 15, 2019. “This award conveys our gratitude and recognition of Friedhelm Pickhard’s long-standing, fruitful commitment on behalf of the university,” says Prof. Axel Schölmerich, Rector of RUB. The medal was presented at RUB’s 20th Academic Anniversary in the Auditorium Maximum (Audimax).

Pickhard, who once studied Electrical Engineering at RUB, is playing a leading role in establishing the future technology campus on the former Opel premises. The ETAS subsidiary ESCRYPT is relocating to MARK 51°7. Today, ESCRYPT is active all over the world. Founded in 2004 as a spin-off of the Horst Görtz Institute for IT Security (HGI) at RUB, the company is now a leading supplier of automotive cybersecurity solutions and of consulting and services for enterprise security and IT-secured manufacturing. Pickhard was the driving force behind ETAS’s acquisition of the successful RUB spin-off – and its later decision to relocate to MARK 51°7.

Close ties to both the city and his alma mater

“Friedhelm Pickhard has played a major part in the positive development of the future technology campus Bochum,” says Rector Schölmerich. Moreover, as an active member on the board of trustees at HGI, Pickhard maintains close ties with RUB. RUB values his engagement and support during the site inspection by the Max Planck Society in July 2017, which was instrumental in inducing the Joint Science Conference to announce its plans to establish the Max Planck Institute for Cyber Security and Privacy Protection in Bochum in May 2019.

Pickhard also prepared the way for the close cooperation between ESCRYPT and RUB’s start-up incubator, Cube 5. Last but not least, he assisted RUB during the inspection conducted by the commission for the nationwide Excellence Strategy funding program of the German federal and state governments. “In so doing, Friedhelm Pickhard has affirmed his commitment, not just to the city of Bochum, but also to his alma mater,” Schölmerich says.

“As an alumnus, I feel a close connection to RUB and to Bochum as a center of technology. I’m proud to see how things have developed there over the past few years, and I’m sure that the opening of the technology campus will be another milestone,” Pickhard said as he accepted his award.
